Mary talks mistakes at Burghley and buying horses

After the excitement of the Olympic Games it has been back to the day job for Mary King.

"We took Chubby (Cavalier Venture) to his second intermediate at Wellington Horse Trials near Basingstoke and he won, because of that he has been selected to go to Le Lion for the 6 year old championships which I am very proud of - especially as Great Britain only got offered 3 places for the class and we were one of them! So we are off to France in a few weeks for that where he will have his next and last run of the season."

"After that it was off to Burghley with Kings Temptress, it is always one of my favourite events along with Badminton and Tess was in great form. She did the best dressage test of her career and we were lying right up there which is always great but then I went and made a very silly mistake on the cross country. It was quite early on in the course and there was a technical hedge, ditch, hedge combination on a left curve and I went in too tight and poor Tess didn't know what I was asking her to do so we ran past it. All I could think of was 'Mary, thank goodness you didn't do that at the Olympics!' As Tess is so experienced, and with 20 penalties we were out of the running, I decided to retire her and we are re-routing her to the 4 star in Pau at the end of the season."

"On returning from Burghley it was a quick turnaround to play groom for Emily at the Junior European Championships in Poland. It was a fantastic week, although Emily had to deal with heartache from the start when Mr Hi Ho wasn't 100% after the journey so they decided to pull her from the team so she only got to ride as an individual. However she then went on to get an individual silver medal and the team won Gold so despite the disappointment she rode really well. For Zippy (Mr Hi Ho) the course was relatively easy because Emily has actually done an Advanced on him so it didn't take a lot out of him and he is now aiming for Weston 2 star where she will be riding him and Apache Sauce in the under 21 class. So I will be grooming again there and that will be our last week together before she jets off to Sweden to work for the winter with Piia Pantsu who breeds show jumping and dressage horses near Malmo."

"So the next few weeks will be busy, Le Lion with Chubby, then Pau with Imperial Cavalier and Kings Temptress. We are also on the look out for horses - both Emily and I have an owner who would like to buy a prospect for the future. I even bought a horse the other day - which is very unlike me - we went to see Ran Arbel who imported Emily's Mr Hi Ho, and I saw a very nice three year old that I fell for - watch this space for that one!"
