Mary looks ahead to 2013

In the first blog of 2013, Mary King tells us what she is planning with her team this year, and discusses the small matter of an MBE! “I had quite a busy time in December so it was lovely to be at home for Christmas and New Year, spending time with relations.”

“On 1st January I drove to Cheshire to pick up Imperial Cavalier (Archie) and Cavalier Venture (Chubby), from their winter holidays at the Davies’ and as of 2nd January the horses were all back in work. We now also have Fernhill Urco back in the yard, which is lovely after he has been away due to injury for a year and a half – it feels really good to have him back as part of the team.”

“So in total we have ten horses in work now, five of which are Emily’s, five are mine. I have just dropped Emily off at Kyra Kirkland’s yard for her to spend January helping her in exchange for training. Meanwhile back at home all the horses are being hacked and prepared for the start of the season by the girls and me. I am very hands on, on the yard – I muck out, clip, do a lot of the hacking – it is very important that we all work together as a team.”

“The horses are all looking really well. Archie and Kings Temptress (Tess) will be aiming for Badminton, it could be Archie’s last season as he is 16 now and neither his owner or I want to push him if he doesn’t want to do it. We will very much play it by ear and see how he feels after Badminton.”

“I will have to work on Tess to make sure she doesn’t have any naughty run outs like she did at Burghley and Pau at the end of last season and Fernhill Urco may go to Kentucky four star which would be exciting. MHS King Joules and Cavalier Venture will be working on getting more established at Intermediate level and possibly doing the CIC** at Tattersalls at the end of May. I am just keeping my fingers crossed for a dry year – ironically since all of the horses have been back in work it has been dry and mild – lets hope that continues!”

“2012 ended on a real high having been awarded an MBE! What an honour! An Envelope arrived in the post about a month ago and it said would I be happy to accept an MBE? To which I quickly responded with a YES and then had to keep quiet until the New Year honours list was announced! What a way to end such a fantastic year!”

“We are still on the hunt for a couple of new horses – one owner, Jill Jonas, who owned Apache Sauce is looking for a young horse and a new owner would like to buy something that has already done a little bit – so I have asked around, phoned my contacts and am following up any leads to see if we can find some potential stars!”

“Emily is all geared up for 2013, she has Mr Hi Ho who will be establishing himself at Advanced level, and two six year olds, Charlemagne and Miss Indigo, who are already doing well at Novice level and may do the 1* at Tattersalls in May. She has two new additions, Redpath Eucanfly who is owned by Bridget Burbidge, and a young Irish mare that has been bought for her by a local syndicate - she is actually by Cavalier Royale so is the half sister to Archie – she is only little but thinks she is 18hh! Emily is aiming to get back on the junior team again and do one better than her silver individual medal this year!”

“Some very sad news for me was that Kenneth Clawson passed away in December. He was somebody that had helped so many young people over the years and gave me a real boost, especially early in my career. He will be very sadly missed.”
