Mary King eyes new challenges with new horses

With the eventing season starting in just over a month we had a lovely catch up with Nedz sponsored rider Mary King to find out how she is feeling about 2015...

"The horses have all wintered really well - in fact I think the best they ever have thanks to the mild weather! I haven't had to give haylage in the fields because even in December the grass was still growing. They are all back in work now and have been since the beginning of January. This month we focus on fitness and building up the road work day by day, each time taking them slightly further and gradually introducing hillwork, then, at the end of January, it starts getting more interesting when we start schooling them."

"Between me and Emily we have 11 horses in work this season. I have Kings Temptress who is aiming for Badminton, Kings Choice who will be aiming for her first CCI**, King Dan who is a 6 year old and will be progressing through Novice and maybe doing a 1 star and then three homebred five year olds who will be beginning their careers! Two of them are by Chilli Morning and out of Kings Temptress – they are both beautiful big boys but surprisingly quite different! The other five year old is out of Kings Fancy and by Mill Law. All of them are coming on really well and are jumping little courses at home. In fact they have just been down to the river for the first time to go in and out of the water, lead by Tess – I always take an older horse to nanny them, and they are going on their first adventure in the lorry to Bicton this week, accompanied again by one of the older horses. It is all about gently, gently and building their confidence so that they are working with you not resisting."

"Emily has a strong string of horses for this year, we have just got a new boy from Australia, called Loxley, who is at two/three star level and is now owned by Michelle Clough and Zara Porterhill. Then another new ride, Dargun, who has been produced by Vicky Tuffs and who I had my eye on a few seasons ago and luckily we were given first refusal on him! Then she has Brookleigh, Charlemagne and Zara, who has changed ownership for this year. So a very promising start to 2015!"

"We managed to get away for a lovely week of skiing and now it is full steam ahead. We had an amazing response to the grooms position when we advertised it and have a lovely girl called Ellie starting next week! So now we are ready to go and it isn't long now!"
